Having had to leave Kingston Art College after only one year was a bitter pill, but that was over ** years ago and since then life has taken over so it was not until retirement reared its head and I moved to the West Country that I was able to follow my passion again. Although I was not actively creative during those years (if you don't count producing a family), Art has been very much a part of my life. As with the proverbial "you never forget how to ride a bike" I decided that rather than wobble along on my own I would join the late Jill Hutchings in her Hewish Studio and begin by drawing from the life model. I have a great love of drawing and this disciple hones all the skills you learn from such a practice and I really do mean practice, practice, practice! After Jill died I revisited Watercolour painting under local artist and tutor Lynda White. Since then my freedom of age has allowed me the time and pleasure of experimenting with all sorts of media and subjects, without having the pressure of competing with other artists or trying to make a name for myself. When asked why I produce such a diverse range of artwork my answer is simple......."if I look at something and it makes my soul sing, I paint it". Not everything works but each mistake brings knowledge, and each completed work drives me on to do better.
As for my achievements; well every completed piece is an achievement..but then so was having a painting selected by the magazine "Leisure Painter" for exhibition at Patchings. I was pleased to have been awarded the Iris Craven cup for watercolour at Lyme Regis and to have exhibited at Charmouth Heritage Centre and to hold both solo and mixed exhibitions at Axminster Arts Cafe. So too has it been encouraging to have works selected for exhibition at Sherborne and the Royal Bath and West.
Maybe you will see something in my gallery that makes your soul sing!
